Well, It's Happened: I've Become Unfunny

It’s fine, it totally is, but I realized somewhere along the line that I’ve become VERY unfunny, quite recently. My mind, burdened by everyday chores, tasks, anxieties, has shed its constricting humorous layer in an attempt to lock in so hard that I instantly become undeniable in all industries, a perfect multihyphenate.

Here are some ways I’ve become unfunny:

I actually almost wrote this newsletter as a joke apology for our emails with Jeffrey Epstein

I was gonna post all these fake emails with Epstein, saying that he was a fan of the Stack, and apologize for emailing with him.

But here’s the thing: Jeffrey Epstein humor is key to the domain of being totally unfunny. Aside from the horrifying nature of his crimes and gruesome nature of his death, it’s just a meme. And memes are not funny. Being funny is about being a clever and witty boy, poised at all times with a rapier wit, making jokes sans tired quippy forms.

I saw this guide to pressing tofu and didn’t go “Ah yes, The Four Bases”

I’m thinking about “AI” too much

I lowkirk believe thinking too much about AI is the funny killer. No one deeply involved in the world of AI, sadly, is funny. Nor any of the EA people, or the rationalists. There’s a particular type of nerd humor they like, but it’s more just ingroup signaling than an actual attempt to surprise and delight those around them. Myopic obsessiveness, by design, bends away from the self-awareness and observational capabilities and distance necessary for proper yuk-em-ups.
