This person (presumably an Indian guy, given our audience demographics) will then need to find their way to the bathroom, where I will have placed an encrypted message. The message will be programmed to self-destruct within 10 minutes, and this feckless Indian guy will have to bring it back to the group. You will debate what to do, whether to send this guy to a fate potentially worse than death (meeting us in a private, secure location). I had a thought earlier today, as in fifteen minutes ago, that’s based on an old email forward, or joke, or something. You’ve probably heard it: X years ago, we used to have Johnny Cash, Bob Hope, and Steve Jobs. Now they’re all dead and we have no cash, no hope, and no jobs. It’s kind of a meme language format thing, though a bit passé. Right, so earlier, I had a thought that remained unfinished along these lines:

I realized a year or two ago that we “publish” on the same schedule as Grub Street Diet, one of the few media properties I’ll still seek out on a Friday. As in, type in the URL, go to a site, etc. Wonder if people do that with us.

In the spirit of March Madness, and tying together that whole thing I just said about how violent it sounds when someone bricks a shot in college basketball—really tortured, convoluted intro (video above unrelated)—I have decided to catalog some of the best things you can hear when watching basketball. One of the worst things you can hear is when the commentators say the phrase “jestergooning.”

“It’s a make-or-miss league”

This is what someone like Vince Carter will say at halftime, usually to signal that, in basketball, the team that makes most of their shots, will, more often than not, win games, while the team that misses most of their shots will usually lose. That’s what they mean by “make-or-miss league”; if you haven’t pieced it together yet, it means that you can win a game by making shots, and lose it by missing them. In the aggregate, that means that if you make a lot of your shots, you can win a lot of your games, and then you’d be a good team, because you won a lot of your games (because you made a lot of your shots). Conversely—well, I don’t need to spell it out for you.

But I might as well anyway: if you miss a lot of your shots, statistically speaking, you will likely lose most of your games. Then, you would not be a very good team. I love when they say shit like this.

“Wisely pulls it back” when a pointguard, for some reason, decides not to engage with a fastbreak

This has long been a favorite of mine. Commentators love to say it’s wise when someone decides a fastbreak isn’t worth committing to, so they slow down and bring it back to the top of the three. Every time, the commentator will say it’s “wise”—even if, honestly, they probably would have scored or drawn a foul if they had just gone to the basket.

My friend Neal (real name Akash 🧐) reminded me of this classic. Just one of those ones you take for granted. I can hear Rece Davis or Mike Breen saying this right now in my head. Usually just what they reflexively say when people are diving for a loose ball.

Saying “gotta make him earn it” when a big man gets fouled

Enemy of the newsletter suggested this one—a great example of the kind of reflexive, machismo, “in-the-90s-Oakley-would’ve-decked-Steph” mentality we still must contend with. A big guy can’t just get an easy bucket. You Gotta Make Him Earn It At The Charity Stripe.

“Getting it done on both ends”

Submitted by recent 30-year-old (unc as fuck). It’s honestly sick when a guy is getting it done on both ends. Translation: he just stuffed a guy at the rim (😳😳😳) and then threw it down on the other end, and also he is getting it done on both ends (both holes being filled, no loads refused).

“Rewarding the big man”

Basically goes hand in hand with the above, but it’s when a big guy, whom you usually would not expect to run the length of the court (despite the fact that he’s a professional athlete), runs the length of the court after making a defensive stop, so then you “reward him” by passing him the ball to score or, even better, yam it in someone’s face. Love this one.

“Makes a business decision”

Edward M.D. suggested this one—it makes sense, because he spends his time writing prescriptions and propping up Big Pharma 🙄

This one seems to have taken off in the last five or six years: all it means is that a guy decided not get dunked on, instead moved out of the way, and in doing so, “made a business decision.” I don’t really follow the logic 100%, but they love saying it these days.

Dishonorable Mention: Anything from Mark Jones

I’m sorry, but I hate Mark Jones’ bullshit. Some people find it funny. I do not. I think it takes you out of the game, and it makes the presentation all about him, and not about the game. I imagine he has a cheat sheet on his person at all times. It is not spontaneous. He is a charlatan. Some of his worst, off the dome:

• “Like the fries are at the bottom of the bag”—hate this one so fucking much.

• “Hotter than fish grease”—fine, I guess. But still. One must wonder: why?

Another thing that’s important to learn is that most readers—including you guys—are so fucking stupid. And I don’t even need to get into that last part. Because at this point, my first line has already done its job. And I just came up with that on the spot.

Most first lines should have an implied, “You’re probably wondering how I get here” framing device. That is lowkey the only thing that makes sense, storytelling-wise.

Because once you start with the most #Random shit you can think of, then you kind of work backwards to figure out how the guy ended up leaving his stepmom’s bong (it’s still making me laugh 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂—like, what????) at the abortion clinic and only realizing it while he’s tonsils deep.

I’ve decided to go see ‘Wuthering Heights.’

The marketing for this movie has promised us that, rest assured, this movie will be horny.

I can’t wait to what viscous, creamy fluids Fennell has injected all over her precious film this time. I have been promised copious amounts of oozing, things bursting at the seams, various meniscii forming as a liquid, via surface tension, reaches its upper limit—and there better be discharge.

In preparation, though, I must take defensive measures. Such a horny film requires that I be vigilant, lest I soil my Gap ‘90s Loose Fit jeans and make a fool of myself in the reclining seats. Here’s how I’ll be preparing myself to see this, apparently, soft-core porno in theaters this weekend. I advise you all to do the same.

First, I’ll be fortifying my pants stack.

What I’ve decided for this outing: I will wear the skinniest jeans possible, but underneath, the loosest boxers one can buy.

This combo will feel incredible. The rough interplay between superfluous cloth and unyielding denim will produce a friction the likes of which my poor thighs have never felt before. It will distract me. This way, I’m assuming, I will feel free and unencumbered at the base layer, but ensconced by a sheer, impenetrable fortress to the outside elements. This combination, I hope, will protect me, should something unfortunate happen in the course of watching Margot Robbie jam her fingers in an enriched dough.

Next, I’ll avoid eye contact with any women 24 hours both before and after the film.

Ramadan is on the horizon, and this will be just the practice I need to get my mind right. For years, I was taught to “lower my gaze.” I was built for this. Emerald Fennell can play all her dirty little games, but I’ve got my eye on the ball. I refuse to be titillated. I will not fall prey to her sordid sexual machinery!

A day or two later, I’ll send an email to Warner Bros. detailing where I’m at, hormone-wise.

During the runtime, I’ll be wearing by Whoop! fitness tracker, to track—among other things—my elevated heart rate, hormone levels, cortisol spikes, and general oxygen blood flow. Last week, I was in Geneva for roughly 24 hours. I then was put through hell—just one more chapter in the long novel of Nabeel’s International Travel Disasters. I didn’t really have anything funny to say about those this week. Instead, let’s focus on this big-ass jet of water.

No one knows why they have this in Geneva (I didn’t really look it up). It seems like the Genevois collectively agreed it was hella cool to have a massive, high-pressured jet of water for no reason spraying everyone within 50 feet. I agree. Imagine the use cases: a tool to put out the world’s most raging, vicious fires…a bidet for the world’s largest man…a showerhead for the world’s largest man…an prostate stimulant (going off the bidet thing) for a slightly less large man, maybe a normal-sized man, just imagine how it would feel…😳

I know I’m not alone in feeling like my entire brain has been taken over by my phone. Seems like every week for the last five years someone else writes a very thoughtful essay on the matter. Perhaps even someone on this very substack… Maybe even twice...

On the spectrum of screen addiction I’m probably not the worst ever, but it got to a place I really didn’t like. I found myself looking at my phone while brushing my teeth at night (vulnerable to admit, but true). It became harder for me to watch long movies or episodes of TV without my phone in reach. If I spent too much time on my phone in the morning, I could feel this tangible film over my brain disallowing me from engaging in other activities like, say, reading a book.

There was a time where I felt like I might never go an hour without knowing where my phone was for the rest of my life. Forever cursed to walk around feeling that hot little rectangle resting on my thigh, burning a hole in my pocket.

They’re really cool—think youtube shorts but longer and with words instead of videos.

This morning I spent a while reading articles with titles such as “IMF Raises Forecast for Global Growth as Tariff Drag Fades” and even “Why This Fish Actually Needs a Hole in the Head.”

I also learned today that Crude Oil (U.S) is up $0.26. 10 year treasury yield though? Dropped 0.039 points. ☹️

The other day my friend said to me, "we didn’t even use Claude for that.”

The other day I was on a walk in Central Park with my girlfriend. Phones were obviously Bricked To The Gills back at our apartment. We’re strolling around the Harlem Meer and we take notice of some ducks floating along the surface of the pond. It was so beautiful, man…they were just coasting along…in a little pack. Some of the surface of the lake was frozen solid. When the ducks approached the icy parts they just turned around and floated a different way. They knew: no swimming through solid ice. Marvelous.

We got really close to this one mallard chilling in the reeds by the water’s edge. This dude had jaw-droppingly gorgeous plumage. Talking vibrant colors, an impossibly smooth head. He was actually kinda hot now that I think about it. He’s gonna make a Lady Duck very happy one day…

When I get on the subway I look down my nose at the sheeple around me, brains rotting as the stations fly by. I’m shaking my head in disbelief the whole time.

I learned how the fuck vinyl is made

I have to be honest. Before Brick, this felt like none of my business. It fell into the category of bridge construction, meteorology, and dry shampoo.

But listen: once I scanned my phone into “morning focus (sports allowed)” it all became super, super clear to me. It’s not that complicated, actually. I know what “half-speed mastering” is. I definitely know the difference between a 33 and a 45, so don’t even assume I don’t.

I lowkey want to tell you all how vinyl is made, but I feel like it’s gonna be easier for you to watch an anthropomorphic AI garlic spread itself onto toast. The process is pretty fascinating honestly. I wish I could tell you about it. But I shouldn’t.

It’s not like I didn’t know I was pregnant. I’m not one of those hicks who don’t realize they’re pregnant, and then one day they poop a baby out. Trust me, I knew. I was doing sunshine fasts (you don’t eat from 5am-5pm), so it would be impossible for me to be in a calorie surplus. The second I stopped fitting into my Alo yoga onesie, I knew something was up. Also, my Apple Watch told me. It told me like every day actually.

Every day, I’d look at my wrist and I’d get a greeting updating me on the baby’s size.

Then once it became the size of an Apple HomePod mini, it started actually showing me a direct feed of what was going on in there. It was as if they installed a ring camera in my uterus but the footage was all bad and blurry. At first it was hard to interpret, like a colored ultrasound. Just bright squishy pink and grey creases, pulsing. But the evolution was fascinating. It became like a social media feed for me.

What is she up to today? I’d obsessively check my watch. OMG, an ear is starting to form. Oooh, now a hair patch! Then all of a sudden there was audio, and I could hear her talking. I guess she absorbed all the Call Her Daddy I was listening to, because when she started talking, she was really funny. She was like an embryonic Nikki Glaser.

Yesterday she did a haul of her groceries and reviewed Califia Farms Creamsicle Infused Oatmilk! She’s kind of a captivating storyteller. It’s all mundane stuff about her day to day life, but she does it in this way, where, I don’t know, I probably sound so stupid right now, but she does it in a way where it all sounds easy and like you’re not alone in this world. It’s relatable and charming and wholesome. I honestly kind of fuck with her.

The watch started giving me updates about our future life together too. These slow motion memory slideshows of us having photoshoots with Train playing in the background would play for me. It’s so weird, because I love Train too. Once I touched the lead singer’s hand at a John Mayer concert. I guess what they say about children is true; they absorb your memories. I look forward to her everyday as my belly grows.

But I told myself I have my sorority sponsor’s engagement party next week and can’t look fugly, so I made an appointment to get an abortion. I picked out an outfit and everything. But then at the last minute, I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t leave the bed. I literally hit snooze on my alarm because I was bingeing my baby’s Survivor recaps. It was like we were in bed together. So I guess I’m gonna keep it?? I don’t know, I think we’ll vibe together!

Now that it’s 2026 the statute of limitations on some of these movies has expired. I can finally reveal a bunch of scenes that, actually, break through the thin veneer of performance and brush with reality, and that makes them that much cooler, of course.

The first scene in The Social Network was actually completely improvised

People don’t know the first 10 minutes of this movie were actually entirely improvised. David Fincher, famously accommodating, actually just turned the cameras on the first day and let Jesse Eisenberg and Rooney Mara get going. They hadn’t even decided beforehand if she was going to be a student at BU or BC—they just figured it out on the fly! Somehow, they both locked in and broke through the cosmic plane to create something ineffable. Thank God the record button was on!

The ending of Michael Clayton was actually entirely improvised

George Clooney happened to just get in a cab and shut the fuck up for 2+ minutes at the end of this movie. And thank God he did—because he wouldn’t stop fucking talking for 2 hours before this. It’s nice to have some peace and quiet.

The capoeira dance from Ocean’s 12 was actually improvised.

Vincent Cassel just had this in the back pocket. First day on set, he walked up to Stevie and said, “Put those lights on in a completely randomized schedule. Let me show ya ass something.” And this is what we got.

The Social Network trailer was actually completely unscripted and improvised.

The truth is, Scott Rudin was just attending a performance of a children’s choir in Midtown and they were singing “Creep.” No one knows if it was about him or about one of the kids in the group. But now? We all know the song to retroactively be about Mark Zuckerberg.

I don’t know. I give up. I don’t want to do this any more.

Don’t really want to think of any other scenes and link them here. If I had started this a few days earlier, I probably could’ve come up with some good ones. But I don’t really care that much. I have other things to do, people to see. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter. Who knows why we still do this. In 2026, I’m trying to reconnect with my Day 1s. None of that fake shit anymore. Life moves so fast, and with such force. We don’t really get a chance to commune with our intrinsic needs. What do I really want? Who do I truly want to communicate with? What are the most important venues for me to engage in? These are the things I’m trying to think through now. I’m about to turn 30. It’s past time to be intentional with my decision-making.

The heavy, wet snow of Saturday lines the Substack floor like a thick carpet, muffling the sound of the frantic activity below—newsletters scurrying every which way, following furrowed paths in search of the nuts and seeds of subscriber dollars, so carefully tucked into caches and hidey-holes in previous months. Low Lift Ask, which has thus far stuck to the safe and predictable zone of Friday, but is yearning for the nourishment of a “new idea,” sticks its tiny little pink nose out to test the air.

Wow, thinks Low Lift Ask, the world is special today. People are free of their 4HL jobs, and weekend Notes App activity has a feral, unhinged quality that could really give us a boost. Maybe a switch to Saturday is what we need to revitalize our staid, tired newsletter written by two irrelevant Indians. After all, Substack is newly a path to cultural relevance and glory, as evidenced by such prolific and advanced bloggers as “The Cultural Master” and “The Spirital Freedom Guide to Happiness.” Maybe we can squeeze a bit of juice out of this stone and finally get that most entry level of culture jobs: showrunner at a really cool HBO show. So yeah, Low Lift Ask needs to be publishing on Saturday. It’s time for this newsletter to dart out of its hole and into the open. As Low Lift Ask gingerly steps out, snow crunching softly beneath its tiny feet, the world seems newly peaceful and serene.

The other day, on Delta’s premier MadHappy sweatshirt-sponsored daily flight, JFK - LAX, during a violently turbulent stretch over the Rockies, I decided to access my downloaded podcast episodes on Spotify. I reached for the most recent episode of Katie Miller’s (Stephen Miller’s wife) podcast featuring my GOAT Kash Patel and his girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins. As irregular pockets of air battered the hull of my Boeing 767, as I chanted Arabic under my breath and gripped the armrests, as the Polymarket graph of my imminent (honestly insane that “immanent” is also a word…) death ticked slightly upward—I had decided to listen, unironically, to three of the worst people on the planet.

36,000 feet in the air, sans WiFi, with nothing but my inherent curiosity in life to guide me into what to do next (I had already finished my book)—and where I settled was scrubbing through to finding out “How Kash and Alexis Handle Personal Attacks.” The Fun Facts section at the end wasn’t even good enough for me to relay anything interesting here. That’s how disappointing it all was. I guess I can break the news here that Kash Patel thinks “Paramount is crushing it with Tulsa [sic] Kings.” Let’s get aggregated, team. Let’s do it.

That was a lightbulb moment for the boy. Turbulence would’ve taken me down, for good, and the last thing I would’ve heard was Alexis Wilkins vehemently deny being a Mossad agent. It made me realize I need to change some things.

I commit to this: I refuse to do anything that inconveniences me and serves our readers positively in 2026, up to and including ingesting any information about the world that might produce a funny or interesting idea for this newsletter 🔥🔥

I solemnly swear to get up to no good, but only without the presence of a single phone or camera or microprocessor honestly, because my brain is too important to preserve now that I’ve just realized all the harm that being on the internet is doing to me. I just realized it. No one else was thinking about it before but now that I just came up with that idea I think it’s important that we recognize it.

Imagine I become so fucking detached and cool that I walk past these restaurants and don’t even think to take pictures of them:

I’m asking you to imagine such a mind because that’s what we can achieve, collectively, if you all afford me this grace. It’s your fault, actually. The ceiling of this newsletter is in the stratosphere, now that I think about it. Imagine Ritam is constantly on his phone and developing ADHD and writing about low-class stuff—lower than a dog—and imagine I’m writing about stuff like Philosophy of Mind and Metaphysics (learned those words from my old roommate who teaches Philosophy).
